April 12th - Jesus' Resurrection and Ascension

Matt 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 21-22 and Acts 1:1-11
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary and some of the other women took spices to prepare Jesus’ body. On the way they asked each other who would roll away the stone, but, when they arrived, they saw that the very large stone had been rolled away. There had been a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled back the stone and sat on it. The angel told the women that “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples.” The women ran back to tell the disciples, but they were not believed. Peter and another disciple ran to the tomb and saw for themselves that it was empty and that the linen cloths were still there.
Meanwhile, the guards had gone straight to the chief priests to report what had happened. They together with the elders devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ If this report gets to the governor, we will keep you out of trouble.” So, they took the money and did what they had been told.
Jesus appeared numerous times; the two men on the road to Emmaus did not recognise him until he broke the bread and gave thanks, and then he disappeared. He appeared in the room with the disciples, showed them his hands and feet and ate some fish to prove he was real, not a ghost. He returned to the room once more when Thomas was there so he could see for himself that Jesus was alive. He met the disciples on the beach, provided a miraculous catch of fish and also gave Peter the opportunity to make up for denying him three times before he died.
He told his disciples to remain together, praying until the Holy Spirit came upon them. Then they would receive power and would be his witnesses to the world.
Jesus was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. He was taken up into heaven and he sat in the place of honour at God’s right hand.
Today you can make poached eggs on toast. An egg is considered to be a complete food. But for us to benefit from it, we need to break it open. (Jesus needed to die, be broken, for us to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.) The egg is placed inside the saucepan (Jesus was placed inside the tomb) and cooked for 3 minutes (Jesus was inside the tomb for 3 days.) The toast is now ready to receive the egg. The toast is like the world, dry and not very pleasant on its own but add an egg and you have a meal fit for a king! So when you eat the egg on toast be reminded of what Jesus did for you and me.

POACHED EGGS ON TOAST
DIRECTIONS:
Fill saucepan with water to about 2cm deep, place lid on pan and bring to the boil.
When boiling remove lid and break one or two eggs into the water. The easiest way is to put the eggs into a small cup first and then slide them into the water. Place lid on pan and turn off the heat.
Leave for three minutes and DON’T remove the saucepan lid!
After three minutes, remove pan lid and using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the eggs and put them on buttered toast.
